Mental Health Services

Since 1976, JASA has offered geriatric mental health services in recognition that older adults have unique psychological needs. Today, JASA continues to provide and expand a variety of services to support older adults who have behavioral health issues, helping them to lead healthier and more fulfilled lives.

JASA maintains a New York State-licensed outpatient mental health clinic in the Bronx with a satellite in Brooklyn. These clinics offer a range of treatment options for seniors suffering from mental health issues. Services include individual and group treatment, pharmacological therapy, in-home counseling, and assistance in accessing a broad range of community-based social services.

Mental Health Services in Senior Centers
JASA is part of a new New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) initiative to bring mental health professionals into senior centers. On-site clinicians will support mental health and the overall well-being of participants by providing information, treatment, and referrals to other community services. JASA is currently launching this program in two pilot sites in the Bronx.

Providing Options to Elderly Clients Together (PROTECT) Program
JASA’s Brooklyn Clinic now offers the PROTECT program, a short-term Problem Solving Therapy intervention, through a new demonstration project of DFTA, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry and with funding from The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation. Many victims of elder abuse suffer from depression and anxiety. This initiative will work to address those issues so survivors can seek the help and assistance they need to address the abuse.

JASA also provides legal and social services to older adults confronting elder abuse through LEAP programs in Brooklyn, Queens, and lower Manhattan.

JASA's Friendship Houses are supportive environments that welcome seniors who are recovering from mental illnesses. The programs include therapeutic recreation, health-related services, and social activities designed to encourage positive community living.

Friendship Houses also provide New York State licensed Adult Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services (BH HCBS), including psychosocial rehabilitation, family support and training, rehabilitation services, and empowerment services/peer supports.

In collaboration with Montefiore Home Care, JASA is implementing a new initiative - in targeted areas in the Bronx - to reduce depression symptoms and improve quality of life for older adults. PEARLS is an evidence-based Problem Solving Therapy model utilizing short-term in-home sessions focused on behavioral techniques to empower individuals to take action and make lasting changes. This program is funded by New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
